My 2011 Earth Hour photo

Last night, our house went dark for Earth Hour. The annual event happens every year on March 26. Participants are asked to turn off all extra light in their homes. I wrote about our participation in last night's blog article.

I was a little surprised at how the Earth Hour experience went. We did this in 2010 and 2009, but this year our 60 minutes seemed to stretch forever! The organizers should be proud. The point of taking care of our planet hit this home. It was a good reminder of what life could be like if we don't all pitch in.

Let me say that I am not a huge environmentalist. What I am realizing is that I can do a few things every day to help take care of our planet. Tossing plastic bottles and aluminum cans into the recycling box isn't complicated. It's also not hard to add newspaper, cardboard or used computer paper to the box.

These aren't big things but hopefully they are enough to keep a few items out of the landfill. It's not perfect but it's a start.
