You may have come to this link from my article How I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest for Voices of Hope. If not, please know that this is the second in a 2 part series. The first part is available from the link above.
A factor for choosing a Blog Talk Radio guest for Voices of Hope is expertise. Does the potential guest have an area of expertise that listeners would like to hear. I'm not always talking about big name stars like Susan Murphy-Milano.
Other areas of expertise have included hearing from survivors, family and friends. Local agencies have shared about their services. Advocates like Susan Murphy-Milano have shined light on advancing through the horrors of domestic violence. Pastors have provided spiritual guidance on everything from using a Bible to finding support within it. Other experts have shared their knowledge and information.
Choosing a Blog Talk Radio guest is a mixture of knowing our audience and filling show requests.
A guest who requests to be on the show will be considered with the same enthusiasm as a domestic violence survivor who requests a show. Some of our most popular segments have come from both routes. I love hearing from both and encourage people to contact me at voicesofhope (at) hopeforhealing.org.
One of the other things to be considered when choosing a Blog Talk Radio guest is availability. Can the guest commit to the scheduled time slot? If not, there's not much chance that we'll be able to use him or her. Very seldom do we schedule a special segment. When we do it's almost always based on a hot topic or special needed (our annual Halloween segment with self-defense expert Anny Jacoby is a special need).
Another consideration when choosing a Blog Talk Radio guest is appropriateness. Not everyone who asks to be on our show is appropriate. Most of our survivors aren't interested in political agendas or products that won't help them protect themselves or help with the healing process.
I appreciate that you may be offering a new high dollar skincare or cosmetic line but unless you are donating big bucks to domestic violence programs our listeners may not be interested. Get rich quick pyramids and work at home programs are generally not relevant and won't be considered.

How I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest
As more people hear that I host Voices of Hope on Blog Talk Radio they inevitably ask questions. I love it when this happens. Hands down, the question asked most often is how I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest.
On Voices of Hope, we provide information to victims of sexual or domestic violence. This doesn't mean that the show focuses on orders of protection or what to do (or not do) when it court. Both of those are extremely important and best left up to local advocates.
It's impossible for one agency to know the ins and outs for every court system across the U.S. That's why it's important for victims who are currently in crisis to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.SAFE. The can be contacted online from a safe computer at www.ndvh.org.
How I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest depends on different factors. The time of year is always taken into consideration. For example, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but it is also Halloween. The goal for that month is to bring in a good representation of survivors who have overcome but to also address personal safety. Kids always want candy on Halloween. Unfortunately, that's not safe for every survivor.
We also look for guests who have unique skills. When a domestic violence survivor asked how to rebuild her financial life we turned to Kalyn Risker with New Safe Start who presented with the NCDSV. She's not only a survivor in her own right but a financial expert. Who better to learn from than someone who has "been there, done that" and can pass the knowledge on to others?
Another factor in how I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest is their experience. Has this person been on a talk show before? How did this person react on a phone call or face-to-face discussion? Being on the air is intimidating. No one wants to be on live internet airways and panic or shut down. I look for guests who feel comfortable with themselves and many of the most popular guests have come through Imagine Publicity.

On interviewing Joan Berry mother of Johnia Berry

Today I had the great privilege of interviewing Joan Berry for Voices of Hope. Her daughter, Johnia Berry was murdered when a random thief broke into her apartment. After he couldn't find what he wanted he attacked Johnia and left a mother without her child.
Joan's strength is a beacon of light to others. Joan has endured tragedy and heartbreak by helping others. She successfully changed a law that requires anyone arrested for a felony in Tennessee to submit a DNA sample. This has helped victims throughout the state. She is an amazing woman.
